Surprise Under the Carpet at Northern Sigma Essay Example for Free
Surprise Under the Carpet at Northern Sigma Essay Based on the information generated by the interviews with the two different groups, what have you learnt about this plant? What I have learnt about this particular plant is the fact that the workers are not in harmony with each other. They also tend to assume things as per the behaviors of the other groups for instance the white male groups tend to think that or rather assume that these women and disadvantaged groups feel that not only were they left out of important task forces but were required to be ten times better than their white counterparts in order to be promoted (Robbins, et al. 2011). Midrand plant employees have no communication channels whatsoever with their senior management and this is rather obvious by the reaction seen on Peter Barnes once the results of the interview have been given. 2. What may have led to these problems? There are a number of factors that may have led to the problems currently being experienced in this plant for instance lack of motivation and training especially for women and disadvantaged groups, lack of proper communication channels and directions from the top management to the workers and vice versa as well as lack of conflict management skills (Robbins, et al. 011). It is clear that conflict exists between the workers thus resulting in poor performance. And despite the fact that majority of employers are highly educated there are no programs offered for enhancement of skills for these employees which makes them stagnant in a business world that is forever changing and in need of new and unique business skills (Robbins, et al. 2011). 3. What consequences are likely to emanate from these problems? Such problems as experienced by this plant result in a number of consequences for instance not being able to keep and maintain workers. Those already experiencing conflict within this plant are pressured into quitting as revealed from the interview results with the case of women and disadvantaged groups by the white male groups (Robbins, et al. 2011). Such companies also tend not to attract potential workers and this may be harmful for the companyââ¬â¢s future success in as far as meeting its objectives is concerned. Organizational conflicts also result in low morale amongst the workers, reduced ollaboration, reduced productivity, passive or aggressive behavior and distrust (Robbins, et al. 2011). 4. Do you agree that Barnes should be responsible for these problems? Explain. I agree that Barnes should be responsible for these problems since he is the general manager having the responsibilities of not only hiring and recruiting of staff but also training process managers under him. A general manager is expected to encourage team members in their work as a way of getting the best output from them (Robbins, et al. 20 11). In this particular case, Barnes left the workers to do carry out the tasks without any particular supervision and expected results by the end of the day. He is not seen as having followed up any of his workersââ¬â¢ performance progress and that is why he is shocked at the results of the interview. An effective general manager must have leadership qualities to be able to lead and direct his workers (Robbins, et al. 2011). 5. What specific recommendations would you offer to Barnes to improve the management of diversity at the plant? As a way of improving the management of diversity at the plant, Barnes should first and foremost consider establishing a conducive working environment where all workers can work in harmony with each other without feeling discriminated or overworked (Robbins, et al. 2011). He should also create equal opportunities for both groups of workers where women and the disadvantaged groups can feel that their contributions are taken seriously in group projects. Clear communication channels should also be established in order for the workers to feel comfortable enough to open up and share their opinions, doubts or ideas regarding projects or the management of the company. This is especially so in the case of the Asian group whose members were considered difficult to understand and very secretive (Robbins, et al. 2011). In this way, Barnes will better manage this diverse workforce and experience better results the next time such an interview is conducted.

To encourage healthier eating Essay Example for Free
To encourage healthier eating Essay To encourage healthier eating, higher the taxes on junk food Although some people might say itââ¬â¢s unnecessary to have higher taxes on junk food, I strongly believe that itââ¬â¢s going to affect the processing of a human body because the amount of fat is going to be lower. First of all, people will spend less money on junk food and it will lead to people saving money, which they can later use to buy something useful. High prices will get people to think about their money. It could even teach young individuals to save money already from an earlier stage of their lives, which is helpful in many ways. Money is an issue for many middle class people and it wouldnââ¬â¢t be reasonable for them to spend much money on junk food when they donââ¬â¢t have plenty of money. Once the prices are higher, people might think twice before paying that much money on something that is not going to help them with anything. Secondly, it would mean a great deal of improvement in a human body. Obesity is a big issue nowadays which even causes death for many people. If the prices were higher, people would buy less junk food which would mean that there will be less people suffering with heart diseases. Many fat people sometimes feel that they would love to be in shape so that they donââ¬â¢t have to be embarrassed in front of people. Consuming less junk food would be the first step and it would get people to maybe go to the gym and get in shape. So higher prices wouldnââ¬â¢t just reduce heart diseases and such but also encourage people to get in shape. Some may say that itââ¬â¢s not going to have any affect and people will still buy junk food because they like to eat it. Those people should be replied with the fact that everything needs a chance to prove. Instead of having negative comments about it before it has even happened, they should think of what it could do if it really worked. Many lives would be saved and obviously money would be saved.

Radio adds Radio advertisement is one another method of cheap and effective advertisement short commercials could be played at different hours of the day to get people use to the brand name intentionally through excessive listening. Marketing Mix Price After the detail examining the market and keeping in mind a wide range of competition an affordable and a very affordable and minimal price is kept thus attracting the consumers a price of 1à ¢Ã¢â¬Å¡Ã ¤ is kept for a average 500 ml can and 60 pence for shandy lights can of 440 ml. Product A source of differentiation is kept against the existence product in the market, high quality and stream line packaging make it to different and much more attractive to its new customers. a high quality standard is maintained and the product is regularly authorised by iso and the brewed industry. Place This is an very important factor to be considered ,the place where the product is to be launched must be chosen very carefully all the logistics should be checked and well balanced ,supply chain should be managed very efficiently with no loose gap distributors should always be toped up .The bottling Plant and the manufacturing plant both are located in Sheffield as they are cheap places for manufacturing and in the middle of the supply chain to different cities logistically . And from there it would be easier and much more efficient to supply the finish goods to its market place without any hindrance and blockage keeping the whole sellers with ample amount of stalk every time and continuous running of the product in the market Promotion This is last and far most important factor of the marketing mix the best strategy for the promotion of the product would be done though several ways which will include through radio and television add but the major promotion activity would be done though news paper as sun and metro the second phase of promotion would be through introducing the product through social events and getting directly involved to the customers making a great impression of the product, which is quiet long lasting. Shandy Life Cycle Every product passes through stages and sequence of process which include stages from introduction to its growth, maturity and finally its end or declining phase ,its associated with changes and abrupt market situations thus interfering and changing strategy and the marketing mix of the product. Revenue and profits of the product can be generated and estimated or plotted as a rolling function of lifecycle stages. Life cycle phase of shandy Introduction At this first stage the major consideration would be on promotion and its diversification ,usually the first start is always slow on sale and its up in build up process while profit of the company will gradually increase on sale with the due time at the different stages. The first expected slow profit for the shandy beer dosent have to do with the product quality but the more cost incured because of the new established company and its new product and its high cost . At first the company now is in its introductory phase thus it is going to keep low margin of profits in order to gain more sales and more market penetration to cycle and rotate the product in the market and make it use by more consumer so it can devlop it self and capture the mind set of people. Growth Thus later in its other phase and stage it can go above its breakeven and gain more profit once its establish it self more and gained the market share This is the second most important phase in the shandy beer has passed the first passing down phase and would have devlop its gain in the market place. Now the company can more look over its market share and make more strategy to capture and compete agin its large competitors as foster and calsberg which have strong hold in the market as per current situation. Maturity This is the most balance stage of the product by then its statitaically praposed and evaluated that the shandy beer would have fully grown and capturize its estimated market share of about 25% in the total beer brewed industry and can look for its other new product and expand its situation gravity fore more fututre projects. Decline As the market strategy of the product are strong enough to sustain its for up coming two decades and so the declining period is less estimated to come and to tought of at this piece of time. Shandy Beer comparison with its existence competitor For a start shandy has much more effcient marketing and devloping strategy as compared to its largent competitor calsberg as it is researched and evaluated calsberg has loosen its great amount of share in the market due to lapse in there strategy and weak managment thus this window of opertunity will be a hitchback for shandy to gain its capital market. Calsberg has some of it weak sector regarding the product as it light brewed and amount in its alcholic vol and the formula used in its ingrident is getting degraded as they are using S3 technology for there production ,keeping in this mind shandy will be using much more higher standard and improve production technology for the best product result. And will be an very much improved product form its competitor. Conclusion Having a deep insight into the thourgh of the above marketing plan it is therefore concluded that i am sufficently accomplished with my initial idea and marketing strategy of the shandy beers the planning is strong enough .and the research is done before hand to tackle the marketing issues and its devloping problems . All work is done on the market mix and practical implmentation of the product thus shandy beers is expected to be gaining its market share quiet rapidly and capture its total market share in estimated 5 years time and be on its mature stage.

Use with caution: Turnitin.com :: plagiarism detection software
Use with caution: Turnitin.com by Valerie Balester, Executive Director We were informed this past summer by Instructional Technology Services that students should not include identifying information on work submitted to Turnitin.com. ITS is concerned about reservations expressed by the U.S. Department of Education regarding student privacy and FERPA regulations. However, some professionals within the field of composition instruction have other concerns: plagiarism detection software like Turnitin does more damage, many of us fear, than violating privacy. One of the most influential professional organizations in composition, the Conference on College Communication and Composition (CCCC), for example, suggests that plagiarism detection software ââ¬Å"undermines studentsââ¬â¢ authority over the uses of their own writingâ⬠(http://ccccip.org/files/CCCC-IP-PDS-Statement-final.pdf). Why, you might ask, should we care? After all, student writing is just practice writing, and it doesnââ¬â¢t really count for anything. Itââ¬â¢s not like our writing, by which we make our bread and butter. But when we treat student writing as inconsequential, so do students, and the result is the careless, poorly written drivel that we have been trying to obliterate with W courses. Students who do not feel pride of ownership and control over their work will not give it the time and attention it needs to be excellent. Beyond this basic concern is the atmosphere plagiarism software detection programs can create, the expectation that students will cheat, that they are basically dishonest in their work. This atmosphere undermines trust and make writing even more distasteful. Itââ¬â¢s just another trap, another hurdle to jump before graduation. Students are encouraged to see writing for college as a game rather than as an integral part of their education. We donââ¬â¢t want that. The CCCC also worries that programs like Turnitin will make college faculty complacent by shifting responsibility for detecting plagiarism onto technology. Itââ¬â¢s only a matter of time before students learn to beat the software. I have personally tested it with my students, asking them to cheat; many of their transgressions went undetected by Turnitin. Students who run originality reports that come out clean may still have made mistakes, but if they rely too heavily on the report, they will not know it. After all, learning citation properly is far more than learning a set of rules, a style, the correct placement of commas and capital letters. Learning citation is first and foremost learning how a discipline creates and disseminates knowledge. It is subtle, takes many years to master, and is the mark of a professional.

Politics In The Gilded Age Essay -- essays research papers
Politics in the Gilded Age Discuss Politics in the Gilded Age. Include major political events and issues, and the roles of the ââ¬Å"bloody shirt,â⬠corruption, patronage, and reform movements. à à à à à The term Gilded Age was named for a Mark Twain book. It meant covered with gold, and was applied to this period as a whole. This was a period of corruption in sordid politics. à à à à à The Republicans and Democrats didnââ¬â¢t really have strong opposing beliefs during this period. The Republicans supported high tariffs and sound money. The Democrats supported lower tariffs and expanded currency. Both rural and urban classes supported each party. They worked with spoils and local issues. Both parties worked to please everyone, and to attract voters. Since both parties were so close in strength, it caused the elections to be fought harder. à à à à à The Republicans used the waving of the bloody shirt tactic. This meant that they brought back the past in order to avoid the real issues. They portrayed the Democrats as rebel traitors. The Republicans were against alcohol. The Stalwarts were led by Senator Conkling from New York and were the hard core machine of elections. Senator Blaine led the Half-Breeds from Maine, and they wanted to be in control of it all. The mugwumps were a group that turned Democrat because of the corruption of the Republican presidential nominee, Senator Blaine. à à à à &nbs...

In the Skin of a Lion Essay -- essays papers
In the Skin of a Lion Historical Obliviousness in Michael Ondaatje's In the Skin of a Lion Michael Ondaatje's In the Skin of a Lion narrates the forgotten stories of those who contributed to the building of the city Toronto, particularly immigrants and marginal individuals. In the very first page of the novel, Ondaatje stresses the concern with personal narratives and the act of storytelling: "This is the story a young girl gathers in a car during the early hours of the morning [...] She listens to the man as he picks up and brings together various corners of the story..." (4). Similar to Crossing the River, there is a framework story, that of a man telling a story to a girl, that opens and ends the novel and gives coherence to the many personal narratives. Patrick has an audience at two narrative levels, namely, Hanna at the textual level and the reader at the extra textual one. The reader is the recipient of the macro story, which is Patrick's act of storytelling, as well as of the micro stories contained in it. Like Phillips' novel, Ondaatje's has a circular quality that makes stories transcend time and space; In the Skin of the Lion ends where it starts. The structure of the novel resembles a Chinese box since a series of interrelated stories form concentric circles, all of which converge in Patrick's act of telling a story to Hanna. He saw himself gazing at so many stories [...] He saw the interactions, saw how each one of them was carried by the strength of something more than themselves [...] His own life was no longer a single story but part of a mural, which was a falling together of accomplices. Patrick saw the wondrous night web --all these fragments of a human order... (145) Simil... ...y. In the Skin of a Lion creates an intimate space where the silenced, marginal and ex-centric author and tell their own stories. Ondaatje's characters comprise a polyphony of voices; even if not all the characters are narrators of their own stories, the reader gets to know their perspectives. He/she has access to the psychic and spiritual life of most of them mainly through Patrick Lewe's story and through a third person narrator. The stories are fragmented and somehow indeterminate. There are many silences and absences that call for an active participation on the part of the reader who tries to put the pieces of the puzzle together. As in Phillips' novel, the privileging of fragmented plural perspectives is an effort to avoid the closure and totalisation that characterise master narratives and celebrate the openness and heterogeneity of human experience.

Comparison Between Tod Homer and Miss Lonely Hearts
Tod, Homer, and Miss Lonelyhearts Another Well Thought Out Essay Tod Hackett, Homer Simpson, and Miss Lonelyhearts from Nathanael Westââ¬â¢s novels ââ¬Å"The Day of the Locustâ⬠and ââ¬Å"Miss Lonelyheartsâ⬠all try to satisfy their desires with sexual wants, and violence. However, they are all very different from each other. For example, their histories, and the way they pursue the fulfillment of their desires are all unique to that specific character. The novel, ââ¬Å"The Day of the Locustâ⬠, mostly focuses on the story of two main characters. These characters are Tod Hackett, and Homer Simpson. The novel gives the story of their lives while they both pursue the young woman, Faye Greener. In this way they are similar, but they are actually very different. Unlike Homer, Tod understands a lot of his experiences, especially his experiences with Faye. Because of this, Tod is portrayed as an educated man, Homer, on the other hand, has almost no idea what is going on. His actions and desires are almost always unexplainable. It seems as though he doesnââ¬â¢t even know what he himself is even thinking, let alone what he actually wants.Because of this, he appears uneducated, and clumsy. Both men pursue things that are artificial. The most notable of these is Faye Greener. Unlike Homer though, Tod knows that he can't have her, because he knows that pursuing her is a self-destructive route. Miss Lonelyhearts is the main character of the novel, ââ¬Å"Miss Lonelyheartsâ⬠. His history is probably the reason for his need for sex and violence. ââ¬ËHis historyââ¬â¢ meaning his childhood, and also the letters that the people send to him for advice.Miss Lonelyhearts has a few encounters with a woman named Fay Doyle. They do have intercourse on one occasion, and she tries to make him have it a second time. However, instead of intercourse, Miss Lonelyhearts decides to beat her violently. His anger and his need for sex are brought about by the le tters that he has to read for his job, and his childhood experiences, like his encounter with the frog. Tod Hackett presents fewer personal experiences that can be used to analyze in a psychological way, but the way he thinks can be.He knows that he canââ¬â¢t have Faye, and he does want to rid Faye of the artificial quality that she possesses, but he canââ¬â¢t help but have a somewhat repulsive sexual attraction to her. Even to the point where he decides that raping her would be a suitable idea. And even attempts it at one point. In this way, Tod and Miss Lonelyhearts are similar, but not completely homogenous. Homer is a bit different from Tod, and Miss Lonelyhearts in this area. Homer is more understandable on a psychological level. At first, Homer seems as though he is uneducated, and also very clumsy. However, his disappointments, and his insecurities soon lead to aggression. His aggressions are expressions of anger that come from his past and his future. He does have a sex ual attraction to Faye, but his actions and feelings towards her are not quite as extreme as Todââ¬â¢s and Miss Lonelyheartsââ¬â¢ feelings and actions toward women. Faye, however, does not take Homer seriously. He then feels like he has been cheated by Faye. He does a good job for most of the book at suppressing his anger until his final outburst that starts the riot at the end of the book. With Miss Lonelyhearts, Nathanael West presents a brutal and selfish character, which lusts for sex and violence, and gets both. With Tod Hackett, Nathanael West presents a successful and educated character that, despite his intellect, desperately wants a sexual relationship with a young woman, even to the point where he thinks about raping her, but never actually does it. And with Homer Simpson, Nathanael West presents an uneducated and clumsy character, which also lusts after a young woman, just not as explicitly as Tod, and turns out to be very aggressive. All of these characters are very similar in most of their desires, to be specific, their need for a sexual relationship, and their needs for aggression whether it is related to their sexual desires or not. Despite their many similarities, each character has a unique way of showing their desires. It may have been a straight-forward approach like Miss Lonelyhearts, or a somewhat cautious yet extreme approach like Tod, or a deceptively timid and passive-aggressive approach like Homer, which ends up in a catastrophically aggressive outburst.
